There are two models: One in a black dial configuration, and another in the blue gradient/green text version widely known as the "James Cameron."
In 2014, Rolex introduced a special version of this extreme dive watch with a “D-Blue” dial as a tribute to Cameron’s deep dive. Instead of the completely black dial, this watch has a dial that gradually changes color from dark blue to black, the way the ocean gets darker as it becomes deeper.
As with many vintage Rolex models, there are several dial variations of the Sea-Dweller ref. 16660. What they all have in common, regardless of production dates, is tritium lume, Mercedes-style hands, and a black background with white writing.
There are four modern variations of the Sea-Dweller today, and two of them are Deepsea models, which got minuscule tweaks for 2022 from the previous reference 116660. The first has a black dial, while a second model (released in 2014) has a gradient blue dial to commemorate the 2012 expedition in which James Cameron piloted a submersible craft .
The Rolex Deepsea meets the most exacting requirements of professional divers in its resistance to pressure, precision and reliability. The "e"s in "deepsea" now have a shorter middle line in the "e". The "s" in "sea-dweller" has been changed from a "flat" s to a "round" one. The "ft" font has been changed. The "=" sign is not on italic anymore but runs as two parallel lines.
Deepsea d-blue dial font variations. While some of the early pictures in this thread have differing light and color values, it is impossible to say why they look different. The latest side-by-side shows very subtle differences but let’s remember there may be nothing more than a craftsmanship issue in the dial department vs. a new dial variant.
